Editorial Policies

Aim and Scope

The most important task of the journal is the publication of scientific articles on the Earth sciences.

The scientific concept of the publication involves the publication of latest achievements in the field of geology, geography, climatology, geocryology, geoecology, as well as applied research on the topics of Earth sciences.

Both Russian and foreign university professors, doctoral students, postgraduate students, Master’s students, as well as other persons involved in scientific research are invited to publish in the journal.

Open Access Policy

This is an open access journal. All articles are made freely available to readers immediatly upon publication.

Our open access policy is in accordance with the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) definition - it means that articles have free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself.

Peer-Review

  1. All submitted scientific articles are subject to mandatory peer-review by members of the Editorial Board or public reviewers.
  2. The Editorial Board adheres to the principle of double-blind reviewing: authors should not know the names of reviewers and reviewers should not know the names of authors.
  3. All reviewers are qualified specialists in the relevant field of science, have publications within the last 3 years on the subject of the reviewed article.
  4. Reviews of articles are kept in the editorial office for at least five years. Upon request, the reviews must be made available to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
  5. Manuscripts of scientific articles are sent for review as the next two issues of the journal are formed in the order of the date of registration of the scientific article.
  6. The time allotted for the review will not exceed two weeks from the date of receipt of the manuscript of the scientific article by the reviewer.
  7. Reviewers should evaluate the intellectual content of the manuscript regardless of the race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, citizenship or political views of its author.
  8. Editors and editorial staff should not disclose information about the submitted manuscript to anyone except the author, reviewers, editorial board, and publisher.
  9. There should be no conflict of interest between the reviewer and the authors of the reviewed work.
  10. The review should be conducted objectively. Reviewers should provide a reasoned conclusion for each material reviewed.
    Reviewers have the right to point out publications on the topic of the submitted manuscript that are not referenced in the reviewed paper. Any statement, whether an observation, conclusion or argument made in previously published work, should be accompanied by an appropriate reference. The reviewer should also bring to the editor's attention any significant similarity or overlap between the manuscript under review and other publications of which the reviewer is aware.
  11. If the review contains recommendations for corrections and revision of the article, the editor sends the text of the review to the author with a suggestion to take the recommendations into account when preparing a new version of the article or to refute them with arguments. The article, revised by the author, will be resubmitted for review (without the name of the reviewer).
  12. The decision to publish an article after peer-review is made by the Editor-in-Chief and, if necessary, by the entire Editorial Board.
  13. Copies of negative reviews are sent to the authors. In case of disagreement of the author with the reviewer's opinion, the author may submit a reasoned response to the comments and the requirement to re-review. The decision on the second review will be made by the Editorial Board of the series.

 

Publishing Ethics

All parties involved in the process of preparing materials for publication in the electronic series "Earth Sciences" of the scholarly peer-reviewed journal "Vestnik of NEFU" (authors, reviewers, members of the editorial board, representatives of the publishing house) must follow the standards of publication ethics described below.

These statements comply with the ethical principles adopted by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). In the event that any of the principles described below are suspected of being violated, the editorial board of the journal will follow the COPE guidelines (http://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines).

 

  1. Authorship

By submitting an article to the Editorial Office of the Series, the authors thereby confirm their authorship of the submitted materials.

The author must ensure that everyone involved in the creation of the publication is listed as a co-author. At the same time, each co-author must bear public responsibility for the content of the article.

In the text of the manuscript, the author must indicate all external sources of information that are relevant to this article, arranging them in the form of citations or references in accordance with the requirements of the series.

Any controversial issues related to possible plagiarism or falsification of the results are considered by the Editorial Office. In case of confirmation of plagiarism or falsification of the results, the article is unconditionally rejected.

Re-publishing of previously published material is not allowed. In case of detection of such a fact, the publication of the author (authors) is unconditionally rejected.

 

  1. Deception and slander

The author must make every effort to ensure that the materials he submits do not contain fictitious data, omissions of links or false statements. If the author finds significant errors or inaccuracies in the work published by them in the journal, they is obliged to notify the editor of the journal as soon as possible and subsequently cooperate with them in order to either withdraw the publication or correct it.

The author should avoid making personal, critical or disparaging remarks and accusations against other researchers.

 

  1. Peer review

The editors adhere to the principle of double-blind peer review: the authors should not know the names of the reviewers, the reviewers should not know the authors.

Reviewers should evaluate the intellectual content of the manuscript regardless of the race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, citizenship or political views of its author.

Editors and editorial staff should not disclose information about the submitted manuscript to anyone other than the author, reviewers, the editorial board, and the publisher.

There should be no conflict of interest between the reviewer and the authors of the peer-reviewed work.

The review must be carried out objectively. Reviewers must give a reasoned opinion on each material considered.

Reviews of articles are kept in the editorial office for at least five years. Reviews can be submitted to the authors upon request (without specifying the name of the reviewer).

Copies of negative reviews are sent to the authors. In case of disagreement of the author with the opinion of the reviewer, the author can provide a reasoned response to the comments with the requirement to re-review. The decision to re-review is made by the editors of the Series.

 

  1. Responsibilities of editors

Editors have the exclusive right to accept or reject a manuscript. Incoming manuscripts must be peer reviewed, but the manuscript may be rejected at the stage prior to review if there is a good reason for this (for example, in cases where the subject of the article does not correspond to the subject of the journal, the article is obviously of low scientific quality, the article was previously published in another edition, etc.). Editors accept an article for publication in accordance with their conviction that it meets the requirements of the journal.

Editors must guarantee the high quality of the materials published in the journal and their content integrity, as well as publish corrections, explanations, apologies in cases where such a need arises.

Editors should not have a conflict of interest with the authors of those articles.

Editors must ensure that the material they publish complies with international standards of scientific ethics.

Author fees

Publication in “Vestnik of North-Eastern Federal University. Earth Sciences" is free of charge for all the authors.

The journal doesn't have any Article processing charges.

Disclosure and Conflict of Interest

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in a reviewer’s own research without the express written consent of the author. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage.

Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.

 

Plagiarism detection

“Vestnik of North-Eastern Federal University. Earth Sciences" use native russian-language plagiarism detection software Antiplagiat to screen the submissions. If plagiarism is identified, the COPE guidelines on plagiarism will be followed.

 

Preprint and postprint Policy

Prior to acceptance and publication in “Vestnik of North-Eastern Federal University. Earth Sciences", authors may make their submissions available as preprints on personal or public websites.

As part of submission process, authors are required to confirm that the submission has not been previously published, nor has been submitted. After a manuscript has been published in “Vestnik of North-Eastern Federal University. Earth Sciences" we suggest that the link to the article on journal's website is used when the article is shared on personal or public websites.

Glossary (by SHERPA)

Preprint - In the context of Open Access, a preprint is a draft of an academic article or other publication before it has been submitted for peer-review or other quality assurance procedure as part of the publication process. Preprints cover initial and successive drafts of articles, working papers or draft conference papers.
 
Postprint - The final version of an academic article or other publication - after it has been peer-reviewed and revised into its final form by the author. As a general term this covers both the author's final version and the version as published, with formatting and copy-editing changes in place.

 

Revenue Sources

The publication of the journal is financed by the funds of the parent organization, at the expense of the publisher, publication of advertising materials, publication of reprints, article processment charges.
